CONVENTIONS AND ETIQUETTE AT AZC

Entering the Building. Conventionally we use the back door, through the kitchen on the West side of the main building, as the main entry way. This seems odd to most people, but it allows us to support a Buddha hall in what is otherwise a very large foyer. Shoes should be left in the dining room to the right before entering the zendo or Buddha hall. (Place shoes carefully parallel to one another; this is a traditional Zen mindfulness practice.) You can reach the back door most quickly if you park on 31st St.

Attire. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal for sitting on cushions on the floor. We try to provide a quiet, muted and austere environment for contempletive practice, relatively free from distractions, and ask that you try not to be a mobile distraction yourself: If at all practical, please don't wear bright colors; perfume or other scents; excessive jewelry; or shorts, tank tops, short skirts or the like. You will notice that most people wear black and many wear traditional long robes.

Cell Phones. Please turn them and anything else that beeps off and leave them in the dining room.

Following Forms. Zen is a highly ritualized practice that makes use of conventional ways to move, to hold the hands, etc. Bowing a is a big part of this. These forms do not have some esoteric significance, but rather help us to be mindfully present and free of personal choice. For most people it takes a while to appreciate the value of the forms. The best way to learn these forms is to watch others, and ask questions, especially after service.

Dues and Fees. The Zen Center is supported primarily by membership dues. For many events there is a publicized fee, but not for daily events like zazen or service. We are, by the way, always willing to find ways never to exclude for financial reasons anyone interested in the Dharma. Feel free to check us out for a while before committing to membership. Donations, of course, are always welcome.

Security Issues. There have been thefts at Zen Center. We try to ensure that a sangha member is always within sight of the back (kitchen) door and that the dining room door is locked, especially during zazen and other events, so that valuables are generally safe in the dining room. However we ask that if you are unwilling to accept this risk you should find a more secure place for valuables.
